One in Three Women On The Planet Will Be Raped Or Beaten In Her Lifetime. One Billion Women Violated Is An Atrocity. ONE BILLION RISING IS a global strike, an invitation to dance, a call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends, an act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers, a refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given, a new time and a new way of being.

Today, on V-Day’s 15th Anniversary, 14 February 2013, we are inviting ONE BILLION women and those who love them to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa (SASC) Ottawa: V-Day 2012 presents a benefit production of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (#TVM2012)

The play is based on V-Day Founder/playwright Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. The piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength with humour and grace. Through this play, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

• Regular Tickets: All tickets are $20 in advance. A small number of tickets may be available at the door for $25.
• Sponsor Tickets: Available at $100 per ticket. With each Sponsor ticket seat purchased, you will receive an $80 tax receipt and a seat in the reserved section.
• Community Tickets: Also available for purchase. These tickets will be donated to women in the community who are service users of either SASC or Minwaashin Lodge and who would like to attend the production. A tax receipt can be issued for the purchase of these community tickets.

The proceeds of this year’s production will go towards two local charities working to end violence against women: The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa (SASC) and Minwaashin Lodge Aboriginal Women’s Support Centre. Also, 10% will go towards the VDay 2012 spotlight campaign – Women and Girls of Haiti.

This year’s production is hosted by The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa in partnership with Minwaashin Lodge Aboriginal Women’s Support Centre.

Sexual Assault Support Center (SASC)
The Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC) is a non-profit charity and community based organization established in 1983. Our purpose is to provide survivor directed support services by women, to women, who have experienced sexual violence. We strive to increase public awareness and offer training on the issues and effects of violence against women. We also engage in action to pressure for change in the structures and systems that contribute to the practice, maintenance, and tolerance of violence, oppression, discrimination and exploitation. Our work is informed by the principles of a feminist, anti-oppression framework, and our vision is a society free of all forms of violence.

Minwaashin Lodge Aboriginal Woman’s Support Centre
The mission of Minwaashin Lodge is to provide prevention and intervention services and programs for grandmothers, women, children and youth who are survivors of family violence and the residential school system, including those impacted by intergenerational effects. A full range of violence prevention and intervention programs and services is provided in the context of reclaiming the wisdom of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultural teachings.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery.

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, Any One Of Us: Words From Prison, screenings of V-Day’s documentary Until The Violence Stops, and the PBS documentary What I Want My Words To Do To You, Spotlight Teach-Ins and V-Men workshops, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities.

On May 14, 2011, Celebrate HER hosted its 1st annual event at the Cube Gallery, welcoming approximately fifty people to an elegant and awe-inspiring evening, benefiting Cornerstone Housing for Women. Westboro songstress, Amanda Cottreau enchanted the audience with the launch of her first solo album, Universe in a Soft Shell. Her special musical guests included Ottawa’s neo-folk trio Musk Ox and Toronto’s unclassifiable darling, Katherine Katey Morley. One of the many highlights of the evening was when spoken word poet, Nathanael Larochette, delivered a candid performance of his prolific prose. As warm hues of color transformed the walls anew, the eyes were drawn again and again to the visual feast of Jean Jewer’s nationally acclaimed abstract paintings. Ottawa-based photographer, Dwayne Brown‘s, photographic series showcased the raw beauty and strength of amazing women in our community. Dish Catering wowed the pallet with a mouth-watering selection of catered delicacies. The clear favorites were the fresh Thai spring rolls with green mango, mint and spicy cashew sauce and the grilled + chilled citrus prawn in roasted strawberry cocktail. The entire selection of offerings was deliciously fresh and beautifully presented – every bite a sensory and visual pleasure.

Endless gratitude to all of the sponsors, donors, volunteers, artists, community and media for helping to make the evening a tremendous success. Together we raised $2,500 for Cornerstone’s Emergency Shelter and crafted an evening many can’t stop talking about. On behalf of Cornerstone and the more than 500 women they support. Much thanks.
