Serena Ngai is a front-end developer and designer with a background in software development, currently working at Shopify.
As the lead organizer of Girl Develop It Ottawa and an Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) Ambassador, she is passionate about mentoring and inspiring young females to explore fields of technology and its many different applications.
It can be intimidating for women to learn and ask questions when they are in an extreme minority. While open and welcoming, today’s budding developer community is up to 91% male. There isn’t a comfortable place where women can learn, at their own pace, and not be afraid to ask “stupid questions.” She along with other like-minded women organize local meetups and offer courses that provide a place where all questions are OK and everyone can learn in a supportive environment. The courses offered focus on coding, leveraging existing technology, and having something to show for it (aka building sweet websites).
